Canadian institution number and transit number
The institution number and transit number are used to identify a specific bank branch in Canada, which can be typically found on bank statements, official bank websites or bank-issued cheques. You may encounter routing numbers in 2 different formats:
- 9-digit format of 0YYYXXXX: a leading zero followed by a 3-digit institution number and then by a 5-digit transit number
- 8-digit format of XXXXX-YYY: a 5-digit transit number followed by a 3-digit institution number, connected with a hyphen
