Risk management

Airwallex's own fraud engine enables you to stop fraud before it occurs and it is fully integrated with Airwallex's payment acceptance platform. It leverages our own models in combination with external data sources to discern fraudulent transactions from legitimate ones. We also make use of 3D Secure and address verification service to reduce fraud

As a merchant, you are able to customize your risk appetite, decide when 3D Secure should be leveraged, or a transaction should be rejected.

Risk analytics

You can view the performance of our real-time fraud protection model on the Risk Analytics page in the Airwallex web app. The Risk Analytics page displays essential fraud metrics and illustrates how the performance of the risk engine affects the payment success and fraud rates of your business.

You can also track historical key risk metrics and identify fraud patterns through time. Fraud and dispute rates are compared to similar businesses to benchmark your current performance.

Risk watchlists

You can create customized watchlists on the Risk Watchlist page. These watchlists can be configured to trigger Allow, Request 3DS, or Block decisions based on various data variables, such as email or card fingerprint.

Watchlist items can be activated, deactivated, or deleted to effectively manage your risk exposure. It is important to note that items on the Allow or Request 3DS watchlist may still be declined in accordance with compliance rules.

As a merchant, you know your business better than anyone else and in order to provide you with this additional level of flexibility, Airwallex enables you to configure exceptions that will overwrite the risk engine behavior. Be aware that this may impact your fraud, payment success and charge-back rates; however, it can help improve your authorization rates in some specific cases.

There are three different Watchlist actions that you can manually set:

  • Allow: Enforces an Allow decision overwriting a block, or verify risk engine results. Please note that action will not be available until you have a history of good fraud performance.
  • Request 3DS: Enforces a Request 3DS decision allowing you to shift liability for any potential fraudulent transaction onto the cardholder's issuing bank.
  • Block: Enforces a Block decision ensuring that transactions are never processed protecting you from potential fraud. Please note that overuse of block actions may decrease overall payment success rates.
