Payments rounding logic

On the web app and in settlement reports, Airwallex rounds gross, fees, taxes and net amounts to the smallest unit of currency before adding them up. To conduct the rounding, Airwallex uses banker’s rounding. Airwallex utilises banker’s rounding as it is more accurate and fairer than standard rounding to reduce the deviation from the actual result.

For fees, we charge a minimum fee of 0.01 for non-zero decimal currencies, and a minimum fee of 1 for zero decimal currencies.

Banker’s rounding (Rounding half to even)

  • When the number to be rounded is followed by 1, 2, 3, or 4, we round the number down
  • When the number to be rounded is followed by 6, 7, 8, and 9, we round the number up
  • When the number to be rounded is followed by 5, the rounding direction is determined by the number after 5:
    • When there is a number after 5, we round up.
    • When there is no number after 5:
      • If the number to be rounded before 5 is an odd number, round up to an even number
      • If the number to be rounded before 5 is an even number, round down to an even number
Number following the number to be roundedRounding directionExample
0 to 4Rounded down3.142->3.14
6 to 9Rounded up3.146->3.15
5 (being the last digit) and the number to be rounded is an even numberRounded down3.145->3.14
5 (being the last digit) and the number to be rounded is an odd numberRounded up3.135->3.14
5 (not being the last digit)Rounded up3.1451->3.15
Why is my net settlement amount not equal to the sum of its parts?

For transactions occurring before banker’s rounding was implemented in July 2024, net settlement amounts were only rounded after the addition of its constituent parts. As such, your net settlement amount displayed in the web app or settlement reports will reflect what Airwallex is settling to you but may not be the sum of the gross amount and fees due to the previous rounding logic implemented.
